Difference Between Traditional Keyboard And Virtual Laser Keyboard
A traditional keyboard, which connects to a desktop computer or is part of a laptop, looks very much like another smaller computer. If you dismantle it, it has a processor and circuits similar to those on your computer. Under each key is a circuit board, and once you press a key, the switch closes. This sends a small electrical current through the network, which the processor recognizes and analyzes. The processor, in turn, sends information about your keystrokes to your computer, and can do so in several ways. Most desktop users connect their keyboard using cables, although common wireless technologies such as Bluetooth allow you to type remotely, provided the computer has the necessary receiver. Laptop keyboards, on the other hand, connect directly to the computer hardware.
When you tap on a virtual laser keyboard, no switch is involved. In fact, there are no mechanical parts moving. The device projects the image of a QWERTY keyboard onto a non-reflective flat surface using a red diode laser. The laser shines through a diffractive optical element (DOE), which is simply a tiny image of the keyboard. The DOE, coupled with special optical lenses, extends the image to a usable size and projects it onto a surface.
But a simple keyboard image will not get you anywhere: you need to be able to analyze the information you enter. An infrared laser diode (IR) is located near the bottom of the unit and projects a thin beam of infrared light. . The plane, invisible and parallel to the surface, rests only a few millimeters above the image of the keyboard. When you start typing, you pass your fingers in certain areas of infrared light. A CMOS (complementary metallic semiconductor) saves the position of your finger in the keyboard area, and a special sensor chip called the Virtual interface processing core analyzes the location of the desired keystroke. The device then sends this input information to the computer after receiving the user commands.
Using Virtual laser keyboards
Most virtual laser keyboards stand on a rectangular base or lift themselves with a support that is detached from the rear. When powered on, the keyboard can connect to a smartphone, PDA or laptop via a USB cable or, more commonly, Bluetooth wireless technology. These two connection options allow the virtual laser keyboard to send information of the keystroke to a word-processing document, e-mail, or any other program in task.
Although they are small and easy to carry, you cannot connect the virtual laser keyboard and start typing at any place. If you were sitting on the bus, for example, and you wanted to write a quick email on your iPhone, you could not project the red laser from the camera on your knees and expect it to work properly. Virtual laser keyboards require flat, opaque and non-reflective surfaces for projection and typing. Once the keyboard is set to the appropriate surface type, the device displays a normal-sized QWERTY keyboard, which typically contains 60 or more keys. Then you just type as you would on a normal keyboard, although the sensation you normally get when you tap on a laptop or desktop computer-jumps and clicks associated with keystroke hits, that feels will not be there. In fact, many users need a little practice to get used to pressing their fingers on a smooth surface.
